“Nothing so liberalizes a man and expands the kindly instincts that nature put in him as travel and contact with many kinds of people.”

– Mark Twain

I know that my love of travel is a gift given to me by a Mother who was committed to travel. Not everyone gets that gift.

But, I also know that it takes a lot less energy to do something, than to think about doing it for years on end and never leap.

If this is reading to you like a soap-box about why you oughta get out of the country/state/town while you can, it is… and it’s a bit of a game plan too, keep reading.

One thing I absolutely fucking love about travel, (especially traveling abroad alone) is the amount of personal growth that it demands of you on a daily basis.

I have been to 30 countries in 31 years and to me…

Travel = Accelerated personal evolution.

Exponential growth, compared to staying at home in your routine.

Every time you meet a new person or find yourself in an unknown situation, you are forced to act and adapt.

You can choose to be the old habituated you or you can reinvent yourself in the moment.

Who do you want to be? How can you embody that, in this moment when nobody is expecting you to be some other way?

FREEDOM!

This isn’t about shapeshifting, it’s about stepping into the you that you’ve been aching to become.

That’s what travel makes space for.

The hard part is bringing that new you back into your life afterwards. (But it’s not impossible.)

As I’ve moved into ‘running a business’ as my new normal rather than ‘extended vagabondary’ (…or should I say, vagabondishness?) the experiences that I use, to get inspired, transform my mindset, or fuel my work, have shifted too.

Not to mention the greater need to create structure around my travel.

Here are some tips for you about how to plan a getaway without ruining everything you’ve worked so hard for:

  1. Pick a date far enough in advance to give you some planning time and BUY THE TICKET! Don’t wait for the time to be right, or allthe expenses to be accounted for in your checkbook, just place it there on the horizon so you can move toward it.
  2. Put systems in place to support you. If you haven’t already, begin finding ways to automate tasks like email follow-up, your online visibility, things that wear on you if you do them everyday that DON’T HAVE TO BE ON YOUR TO DO LIST! If that means hiring an assistant or a virtual assistant, it is totally worth it.
  3. Create a game plan for the money and the clients between now and take-off. How much money will need to come in? Who will you need to notify or schedule differently for the time you’re away? Make those calls!
  4. Imagine how fun it’s going to be once you’re landing in paradise, or wherever, and all the wonderful things you will do, see, eat or experience there… This is a vital part of the process of any manifestation game. Spend some time daydreaming to bring about the most wonderful trip you can muster.

Dream big, darling!

You only live once… at least this time around 😉
